Things you can always say

I don't know. I don't recall. I don't understand the question. Could you rephrase that? May I see the document? That's two questions. That's not what I said. I don't want to speculate. Not that I'm aware of. I'd like to take a short break. I'd like to correct something I said earlier. I've answered that question.

The rules that never change

  1. Tell the truth. Every other rule is second.
  2. Pause. Count to three before every answer.
  3. Answer only what was asked. Then stop.
  4. Don't guess. "I don't know" is a complete answer.
  5. Ask to see any document before answering about it.
  6. Say it out loud. A nod isn't on the record.
  7. If your lawyer speaks, you stop.
  8. You may ask for a break — just not mid-question.
